With two offices separated by the Atlantic and several time zones, passing the ball belongs to Commercial Type’s daily routine (and our interview). Founders Paul Barnes (UK) and Christian Schwartz (US) have been collaborating since 2004 when they were commissioned to design the extensive Guardian Type family for the British newspaper of the same name. Who knows, perhaps you will share my love of slab the name implies, Commercial Type means for their typefaces to be used. So I've put together a modern collection of slab serif typefaces, some popular, some not so popular-but I like them all.Take a look at the 10 slab serif fonts below, let me know what you think. To try and get back to the point, all these inventions and products created new brands and helped kick-start the advertising industry. All those mass-produced products needed more and more attention-grabbing type styles.Type styles for bill posters, billboards, magazines, newspapers and just about any mass marketing medium that could be exploited-with the technology available. That reminds me of a quote by Charles Martin "They say God made man, but Sam Colt made them equal".Just a few years later Coca-Cola was born by Dr John Stith Pemberton, and we all know how that went.Other examples of 1800's products are the Fax Machine, the Escalator, the can opener, Vacuum Cleaner, Sewing Machine, Chewing gum and the Telephone.Okay, so you may know when the telephone was invented, but the Fax Machine? That's odd-right? I thought that was invented in the 1980's. With the industrial revolution in full swing, it was a time full of new and exciting products.Real products, not like some virtual mobile app that wipes your arse. For instance, in 1836 the Colt Revolver was created by Samuel Colt and by the time of U.S civil war it was perhaps the best-known firearm. A brief historyĪnother thing that I think people forget is that the 1800's was full of innovation. I'd just love to have a go at creating some woodtype and printing it on those old machines.I'll make it one day. It was honest, bold and simple. So much so, that one day I'm going to plan a trip to the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in America. They hark back to old wood type from the 1800's, when everything was hand set, and somehow felt more real. They have a charm that really resonates with me.
